    Get this from a library! The gleam of bayonets: the battle of Antietam and Robert E. Lee's Maryland Campaign, September [James V Murfin].   The Gleam of Bayonets was the first book I read strictly devoted to Antietam. I'd go with Sears for a good understanding of the battle. I found Carman and Priest good for detailed accounts, but they don't provide as good an overall picture (IMO).

The Gleam of Bayonets was the first book I ever read on the Maryland campaign of and the battle of Antietam, and it remains one of the best.

I find myself going back to it time and again for information on the political and diplomatic context of the campaign as well as the military strategy and tactics/5(3).

The Gleam of Bayonets by James V. Murfin is a worthwhile read concerning the bloodiest day that the American military has ever experienced. It is not the best book I have read concerning Antietam. For that I would recommend Landscape Turned Red: The Battle of Antietam by Stephen W.
